What happens if I do not have a will?If you die without a will, the laws of your state will by default determine how your property is distributed. While laws vary state to state, typically the distribution would be to your spouse and children, or if none, to other family members. Having a will ensures that your property is distributed as you want it to be and also allows for a myriad of other decisions that your state's general default provisions cannot address, including minimizing your estate's tax obligations.
-
I do not have a lot of assets. Do I need a will?As mentioned above, a will addresses how your property is to be distributed but also allows you to make other appointments. For example, a will allows you to appoint someone to be the guardian of your children upon your passing. Estate planning may also consist of a healthcare power of attorney (living will) and a power of attorney. These documents allow you to appoint who shall be responsible for healthcare decisions and access to your financial accounts, respectively, if you become incapacitated. These are important documents to have regardless of how many assets you own.
-
How much do you charge for estate planning? Our estate planning packages start at $1,500 for an individual and $2,000 for a couple. As our estate planning services are tailored to your specific needs, we encourage you reach out for a free consultation to see how we can help you.
-
How long does it take to prepare my estate plan?Clients can expect that from the time our office has been officially engaged to represent you to your executed estate plan typically takes two to six weeks. Estate planning is a sensitive subject. Jason takes the time to educate and advise you on your options to develop a customized plan that protects you and your family.
